Creative Writing for Beginners
Learning to write isn't about finding some hidden talent inside yourself. It's about showing up consistently and building skills one small step at a time. This program walks you through the basics without pretending it'll turn you into a bestselling author overnight.
Who This Works For
You've wanted to write but keep putting it off. Maybe you journal occasionally or have story ideas rattling around your head. This program suits people who need structure and encouragement to actually sit down and write regularly. No prior experience required.
What You'll Actually Do
You'll write. A lot. Short pieces at first, then longer ones. We'll cover character development, dialogue that sounds like real people talking, and how to describe a setting without boring everyone. You'll share work with other students and give feedback too.
How Long It Takes
The program runs for six months. That might sound like a lot, but writing takes time to develop. You'll need about four hours per week for exercises, reading, and peer reviews. Some weeks you'll breeze through, others will feel harder.
What You Get Afterward
A portfolio of finished pieces that show your progress. More importantly, you'll have a daily writing habit and the confidence to keep going on your own. We can't promise publication deals, but you'll have solid skills and work you're proud of.

The Learning Path
We break everything into manageable chunks. Each phase builds on what came before, so you're never drowning in new concepts. The structure keeps you moving forward even when motivation dips.
Getting Started: Foundations
The first six weeks focus on showing up and writing without judgment. You'll experiment with different styles and find what interests you most.
- Daily writing exercises to build consistency
- Reading assignments that show different approaches
- Basic storytelling structure and why it matters
- Your first complete short piece by week six
Building Skills: Character and Voice
Months two and three dive into creating characters people care about. You'll also find your own voice instead of imitating authors you admire.
- Character development beyond surface traits
- Writing dialogue that reveals personality
- Point of view choices and their impact
- Developing your unique writing style
Crafting Stories: Plot and Pacing
The middle section teaches you how to keep readers engaged. You'll learn when to speed up, when to slow down, and how to build tension that actually works.
- Story structure that feels natural, not formulaic
- Pacing techniques for different story types
- Conflict creation and resolution
- Revision strategies that improve your work
Final Project: Bringing It Together
The last two months focus on completing a longer piece using everything you've learned. You'll revise with feedback from peers and develop a sustainable writing practice.
- Complete a 5,000-word story or essay
- Multiple revision rounds with detailed feedback
- Building a writing routine that lasts
- Next steps for continued development
Ready to Start Writing?
Our next cohort begins enrollment in mid-July. Classes start in late August, giving you time to prepare and get excited. We keep groups small — around 15 students — so everyone gets individual attention.
The application is straightforward. We ask about your writing goals and what you hope to get from the program. There's no skill test or writing sample required. We just want to know you're committed to showing up and doing the work.
If you have questions about the program structure, time commitment, or anything else, reach out. We're happy to talk through whether this fits your schedule and goals.
